Description
Name: Ugrunaaluk kuukpikensis
Meaning: ancient grazer of the Colville River
Time: Late Cretaceous, c. 69 million years ago
Place: Alaska
Size: adult size is uncertain, but probably over 10 m (33 ft) long
Type of Dinosaur: edmontosaurin saurolophine (shovel-beaked duckbill dinosaur)
Known from Alaskan bonebeds where juveniles are especially well represented, Ugrunaaluk appears to have spent all year in the high Arctic, rather than migrating south for the winter. This one is given the beginnings of a fleshy 'cockscomb' on top of its head, unknown in this species but recently found in its close relative Edmontosaurus regalis. This one is a juvenile; as it grows up the soft-tissue crest will become more prominent and its snout will become even more flattened and elongate.
